Job Overview

The School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor-Educator in American Politics. The subfield is open, but candidates will teach multiple sections of a course in core American political ideas and institutions. The appointment is intended to begin August 15, 2025. Assistant Professor-Educator positions typically have an initial appointment of 3 years with reappointment to a 5-year contract. Promotion to Associate Professor-Educator is possible after 5 completed years based on School promotion criteria (and Full Professor-Educator subsequently). Reappointment and promotion are based on excellent performance in pedagogy, teaching, and service (committee work, advising, recruitment and retention efforts), while remaining current in salient research trends being covered in classes taught.

 

SPIA offers an MPA, MA and PhD in Political Science as well as three undergraduate BAs (Political Science, International Affairs, and Law and Society). SPIA also houses three research centers—the Portman Center for Policy Solutions, the Center for Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (CTRHT) and the Center for Cyber Strategy and Policy (CCSP).

Essential Functions

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in American civic literacy (American Political Thought) at the introductory level as a new University of Cincinnati general requirement and Introduction to American Politics. The courseload is 3-3, but 2-3 in the first year. The course will be supported with teaching assistance (graders).
  • Support School governance through unit-level, college, and/or university committee service and student advising. Engagement with the wider university community, external partners, and/or national and international professional organizations, including through peer review, is also expected as professional service.

 

Minimum Requirements

Prior to effective date of the appointment, PhD in Political Science or a related field.
