Job Description
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Peer Support Specialist works directly with program participants, community-based providers, and government agencies to assist participants in orientation to services and successfully navigating their community reintegration processes. Through strength-based participant engagement, the Peer Support Specialist is responsible for helping participants address obstacles, barriers, avoid re-incarceration, substance abuse, and relapse, and other detrimental life stressors. This position works face-to-face with program participants to provide a lived experience that may be invaluable to current participants. The Peer Support Specialist provides individualized and group services to assist in the removal of barriers and risks and managing needs. The Peer Support Specialist is required to utilize the 16 Peer Support Special competencies as defined by the California Mental Health Services. Additionally, the Peer Support Specialist is required to utilize evidence-based practices for participant engagement and service provision, including, but not limited to, Motivational Interviewing, Stages of Change, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Information and Referral, and Advocacy. The Peer Support Specialist is required to provide all services under Drug Medi-Cal and Medi-Cal standards of practice and care.
Peer Support Specialist Minimum Qualifications
A current Peer Support Specialist Certification from a granting institution endorsed by the California Department of Health Care Services and the California Mental Health Services Administration.
Lived experience with criminal justice and/or behavioral health systems.
Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Intermediate computer skills required.
Must meet security clearance requirements.
Must possess a current TB Test.
Must possess a current California Driver’s License.
Comply with applicable ethical and professional standards of conduct.
Ability to promote culturally appropriate and gender responsive services.
