Job Description

Background:

The Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety and Medical Error Reduction (BLC) seeks an energetic, resourceful Health Policy Analyst for September-December 2014, with the possibility of extension.

Originally established in 2004 within the MA Department of Public Health, and after a several year hiatus, the BLC was recently reestablished as an independent agency within the Center for Health Information and Analysis. The BLC has a broad mandate to improve patient safety in Massachusetts. It is named after Betsy Lehman, the Boston Globe health journalist who died from an overdose of chemotherapy in 1994.

The BLC has undertaken a strategic planning process and program of research to assess the existing patient safety landscape, identify gaps and areas of need that it is well-positioned to address, and set achievable short and long term goals and priorities. It is engaging a broad range of stakeholders through individual outreach and a series of advisory roundtables and other activities. It also is planning a major event in early December 2014, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of Betsy Lehman’s death, which will serve as a forum for the release of the BLC’s research findings on the state of patient safety in Massachusetts.

The deadline to apply for this position is September 10, 2014 with a salary range of $18-$24 per hour.  We reserve the right to close this posting before the deadline.

Key Duties:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Temporary Health Policy Analyst will provide general research and analytical support to the BLC, and will:

  • Build upon an existing literature review of patient safety
  • Develop and maintain a system for tracking patient safety news and recent publications
  • Synthesize the literature and news reports for internal and external dissemination
  • Assist with development and analysis of surveys and conduct other data collection activities
  • Support and participate in stakeholder interviews and work groups

Qualifications:

  • A BA or BS degree is required; an advanced degree in public health, public policy or a related field, or work toward such a degree is strongly preferred
  • A demonstrated interest in health policy
  • Ability to conduct health policy literature reviews
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative health policy research methods
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team
  • Flexibility and a desire to work in a startup environment
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to organize information and concepts clearly, concisely, and logically
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
